A coalition of concerned citizens under the Zamfara Elders Support for Peace and Development has called on Governor Dauda Lawal to redirect his administration’s focus toward addressing the numerous socio-economic challenges facing the state.
In a statement issued this week, the elders group urged Governor Lawal to prioritize good governance, unity, and public service delivery over political disputes. The group expressed concern over the state’s ongoing development challenges, citing issues in the education, health, and water sectors.
They appealed for restraint in public discourse involving past leaders, noting that such narratives should not overshadow the urgent need for policies and actions that can improve the lives of ordinary citizens.
The elders highlighted persistent challenges in rural development, education, and public health, calling on the government to take urgent action. They said that many primary schools in rural areas remain under-resourced, while some have been closed due to infrastructural issues.
In the health sector, the group described the need for more modern facilities and trained personnel to serve the growing population. They also pointed to the need for improved access to clean water, especially in rural communities.
Fire service capacity was another area of concern. The elders encouraged the government to invest in emergency response infrastructure to ensure public safety in the event of fire outbreaks or disasters.
The group called for transparency in budgetary decisions and expenditure. They encouraged the administration to ensure that public funds are directed toward programs that benefit the majority of Zamfara’s population, particularly in essential areas such as health, education, and civil service welfare.
They also urged the state government to work collaboratively with the legislature and relevant institutions to ensure proper oversight and checks and balances.
In their concluding remarks, the elders called on the governor to rise above political differences and work towards a more unified and prosperous Zamfara. They acknowledged the complexity of governance but stressed the importance of inclusive and focused leadership.
“We believe Zamfara has the potential to overcome its challenges if the government remains focused on service delivery, reconciliation, and sustainable development,” the statement read.
They also urged leaders at all levels to show empathy and commitment during times of crisis, emphasizing the importance of visible and compassionate leadership.
