Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has expressed strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it a necessary step for national security.
Speaking to journalists in Owerri, Uzodimma highlighted the escalating political tensions in Rivers State, emphasizing its critical role in Nigeria’s economic stability due to its significant crude oil production. He praised President Tinubu’s proactive approach, stating, “Prevention is better than cure,” and noted that the declaration aims to prevent potential violence and unrest from unresolved political disputes.
Uzodimma also commended the National Assembly for endorsing the President’s decision, underscoring the importance of maintaining law and order. He assured that the Progressive Governors’ Forum, which he chairs, stands firmly behind the President in actions that safeguard the country’s security and stability.
The state of emergency in Rivers State was declared following a series of events, including the demolition of the State House of Assembly in December 2023 by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, which left the legislative arm inactive for over 14 months. Despite interventions, the crisis persisted, raising concerns about governance and security in the state.
President Tinubu emphasized the necessity of this action to restore democratic processes and address security challenges in Rivers State, ensuring stability and protecting the nation’s economic interests.
