The US Embassy in Nigeria has introduced changes to its visa policy, effective July 8, 2025.
The US Department of State reduced visa duration for Nigerians from five years to three months for non-immigrant visas, citing reciprocity for similar treatment of American citizens in Nigeria.
This change applies to various non-immigrant visa categories, including tourism and business visas.
However, existing visas issued before July 8, 2025, will remain valid and unaffected by this change.
This change applies to non-immigrant categories, including tourism and business visas, which constitute a substantial bulk of annual approvals for Nigerian citizens.
Meanwhile, this change reverses a previous bilateral agreement in March 2023, which increased visa validity for Nigerian citizens from two years to five years.
As a result, Nigerians will now need to apply for new visas more frequently, which may lead to increased costs and logistical challenges.
The US Embassy’s decision has raised questions about the future of bilateral relations between the two countries.
Reacting to this, a user, Adedolapo Daniels remarked, “They should have stop visa applications outrightly: they are coward! Nigeria will reciprocate that as fast as possible”.
Another user, Kehinde Ade stated, “I like the way Nigeria government are acting indifferent to all these anti-Nigerian policies by Trump administration.Rather than being pained we should make it reciprocal”.
While, David Fashola queried, “I don’t know why Nigerians are rushing to America when other countries are ready to accept us ’.
