UNICAL sends 200–600 level dental students home over excess admission

The University of Calabar, UNICAL has ordered all students in the Faculty of Dentistry and Dental Surgery from 200 to 600 levels to leave campus following issues of over-admission beyond the approved quota.

The directive was issued after a meeting between the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Banku Obi, the affected students, and their parents.

During the meeting, the university acknowledged that it had admitted far more students than the quota approved by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

Students have expressed shock and disappointment, stating that they had already spent millions on tuition, accommodation, textbooks, and other expenses before being abruptly sent home.

One student questioned how the institution admitted over 300 students when the approved quota only allows for 10 graduates annually.

Another described the situation as a “huge injustice,” blaming the school’s greed for the crisis.

Reports also indicate that the Vice Chancellor warned against any form of protest over the matter, further fueling anger and frustration among the affected students.

As the crisis deepens, students are calling for a reversal of the decision and demanding accountability from the university management.
