U.S. based Nigerian doctor shares experience of patient losing leg to infected dog bite

A Nigerian lady based in the U.S. and working as a doctor has shared a disturbing incident involving one of her patients, whose leg had to be amputated after it got infected from a dog bite—inflicted by her own pet.

The story was shared in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

According to the doctor, the patient came in with a dog bite that later developed a serious infection, leading to the decision to amputate the affected leg.

She used the incident as a warning to dog owners and others who often downplay the risks associated with pets.

In her words: “My patient came in after being bitten by her own dog. The wound got infected and now her leg will be amputated today.”

She added: “This is exactly why I am always cautious and terrified of pets, especially dogs. ‘Come close, it doesn’t bite.’ I’m sorry, but how do you really know that? ”

As the post gained traction, many users flooded the comment section to share their thoughts, with some expressing fear and others reflecting on their own experiences with dogs.

See some reactions below:

@MideTosin1: “I don’t even like dog for anything. This is really sad.”

@DigitallyStoic: “Fear not the pet, but the unguarded heart. Your caution is prudent, yet terror is a choice. The dog’s bite is fate; your dread, a self-inflicted wound. Tend the wound within: acknowledge risk, act with prudence, and free yourself from the leash of fear.”

@DayoOjo: “My dog has never bitten anyone, except charging at his vet during surgery. But I can never guarantee anyone. Anything can happen and nothing will happen.”

@Adeyemi065: “Na why I dey always hold 2by2 rod whenever I wan visit a house with dog.”

@FabunmiPatricia: “Ahhh so sad. Speedy recovery to the patient. What will happen to the dog now? I don’t like dogs at all…chaiii.”
