U.S. President Donald Trump has reacted to the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as new Pope, describing it as a proud and historic moment for the United States.
Taking to his Truth Social platform on Thursday, Trump congratulated the new pontiff, who made history as the first pope from the United States.
“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country,” Trump wrote.
Cardinal Prevost was elected by the College of Cardinals at the Vatican on Thursday, May 8, 2025, after a swift conclave.
He has taken the papal name Pope Leo XIV and made his first appearance to the world from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, where he addressed thousands of faithful in Italian.
Born in Chicago, the new pope is regarded as a moderate within the Church and had a close working relationship with his predecessor, Pope Francis.
