Nigerian Army troops under Sector 2 of Operation Hadin Kai have stopped a planned bomb attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters along a major highway in Borno State.
The soldiers killed two of the suspected terrorists during an ambush operation along the Trans-Timbuktu (TT) corridor, near the Katarko–Goniri area.
This was revealed in a post on Monday by security analyst, Zagazola Makama, on his X handle.
According to Makama, the troops acted on reliable intelligence that ISWAP members were moving to plant Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) along the route.
“During the encounter, troops engaged the terrorists in a brief but decisive firefight, killing two insurgents and forcing others to flee.
“Items recovered from the scene include two AK-47 rifles, several magazines, a motorcycle, and materials used for making explosives. The soldiers also found tools used to dig into tarred roads where IEDs are usually hidden,” Makama wrote.
Makama said the quick action of the troops helped to stop what could have been a deadly attack on both military and civilian vehicles using the highway.
Following the incident, the military has increased patrols and route-clearing operations in the area to stop future attempts by insurgents.
