President Bola Tinubu has decided to reappoint Mohammed Alkali as the Managing Director of the North-East Development Commission (NEDC). Alkali, who was the pioneer managing director of the commission, was originally appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
However, when Buhari left office, he did not renew Alkali's appointment. There were reports that Sadiya Umar, the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, wanted Abu Hashidu to be appointed as the MD.
In May, Shehu Garba, a former presidential spokesperson, mentioned that Buhari instructed the Hashidu board to commence duties without senate confirmation.
But now, in a letter presented by Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, on the floor of the upper legislative chamber, President Tinubu has requested that Alkali be screened for another four-year term. He cited Section 5(b) of the North-East Development Commission Establishment Act of 2017 as the basis for his request.
