Born on June 19, 1963, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori is a prominent Nigerian politician who currently serves as the Governor of Delta State. Prior to assuming his role as the state’s governor, he held the esteemed position of Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, representing the Okpe Constituency in Delta State. He is affiliated with the People’s Democratic Party (Nigeria).
With his strong political track record, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori secured victory in the gubernatorial elections held on March 18, 2023, and was subsequently declared the governor-elect of Delta State on March 20, 2023, with the support of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Early childhood and education
Sheriff Oborevwori, hailing from Osubi town in the Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, was born on June 19, 1963. His parents, Chief Samuel and Mrs. Esther Oborevwori, played a significant role in his upbringing.
He commenced his early education at Alegbo Primary School, followed by his secondary education at Oghareki Grammar School, Oghareki. In 2004, he graduated from the esteemed Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in political science. His pursuit of academic excellence continued as he went on to acquire a master’s degree in political science from the Delta State University Abraka in 2010.

Political career
Sheriff, prior to his emergence as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate in Rivers State, had already established himself as a prominent figure in politics. He served as the representative of the Okpe State Constituency.
In a notable turn of events, he was elected as the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly on May 11, 2017, following the impeachment of the then Speaker, Rt. Hon. Monday Igbuya.
Before assuming this leadership position, Sheriff held various positions of responsibility, showcasing his dedication to public service. He began his political journey as a Councilor in 1996 and subsequently served as the Chairman of Osubi Community from 1996 to 2003. From 2003 to 2006, he acted as the Special Assistant to the Governor of Delta State on Youth Development, while also serving as the Senior Special Assistant on Security to the Executive Governor of Delta State from 2012 to 2014.
Sheriff’s commitment to maintaining peace and justice in his community led him to become a Justice of Peace in 2007. Furthermore, he served as the Special Adviser to the Governor of Delta State on Land Security from August 2007 to September 2010. Notably, he played a significant role as the State Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme in 2009 and 2010, further contributing to regional development.
In recognition of his dedication and support from his constituents, Sheriff was elected as a Member of the Delta State House of Assembly in 2015, representing the Okpe State Constituency. Personal Life
Sheriff Oborevwori is happily married to Mrs. Oborevwori Tobore. However, in May 2011, a distressing incident occurred when she was reportedly abducted by gunmen along Osubi road in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State. The perpetrators of this heinous act were apprehended, and justice prevailed as they were subsequently convicted and sentenced to serve 21 years in prison [10].
Professional affiliations, awards and special recognition
On June 24, 2018, it was reported that Rt. Hon. Oborevwori demonstrated his commitment to education and empowerment by providing scholarships to 25 students, both indigenes and non-indigenes, in Okpe Local Government for the 2018/2019 academic session. Under the Oborevwori Foundation Scholarship Scheme, a total of six million naira was dedicated to this educational support program.
Furthermore, the philanthropic efforts extended beyond education to include entrepreneurship support and empowerment initiatives. Petty traders, market women, and artisans were among the beneficiaries. The generosity witnessed the provision of 24 buses/cars, 10 tricycles, and 20 hairdressing salon kits, which included generators. Additionally, 40 grinding machines were donated to millers, 30 sewing machines to tailors, and 20 deep freezers to market women involved in the frozen food business.
