The Nigerian Senate has demanded compliance with the Supreme Court decision on local government council autonomy.
Senator Tony Nwoye, representing Anambra North senatorial district, introduced the motion, but the chamber went into executive session to discuss the motion.
After the executive session, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau, urged senators to uphold the two prayers as raised in the motion
Barau said: “Mr. President, based on the deliberation that was made by this August Senate in the just concluded executive session, I stand to move on behalf of this Senate for the approval of two prayers in respect of the motion that was brought by Senator Tony Nwoye (Anambra North), thereby discarding the earlier prayers in the motion as brought by the mover.
“All states and local governments to fully comply with the recent Supreme Court’s judgement on the disbursement of and utilisation of funds according to all local governments in Nigeria.
“That the Senate ensures alterations to the relevant provisions of the Constitution to provide for the full autonomy of the local governments in Nigeria.”
The first prayer was seconded by Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central senatorial district, and the second prayer was seconded by Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, representing Borno North senatorial district.
The two amended prayers were upheld at a session presided over by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
