Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday, reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to education, emphasizing its role in unlocking the potential of youths and building a prosperous Lagos.
He made the assertion during the commissioning of three new sets of ultra modern block of classrooms constructed by Lagos State government and Special Committee on the Rehabilitation of Public Schools,SCRPS at St Luke Junior Grammar School, Bariga, Mainland Junior Secondary School, Fadeyi, and Euba Junior High School, Mushin, Lagos.
Represented by the Commissioner for Transport, Oluwasegun Osiyemi, in Bariga, he noted that the initiative marked a significant milestone in his administration’s efforts to improve education infrastructure. He noted that the development was part of a broader effort, with nine other schools across Lagos being commissioned this week.
Describing education as the game-changer for Lagos’ future, he posited that integrating education and technology would create a robust foundation for the future of the state and would also ensure that public school students had access to cutting-edge learning tools and environments that rival the best in the world.
He said :”The newly commissioned facilities exemplify our vision for a transformative Lagos where quality education is accessible to every child, regardless of background,” he said.
Represented by the Special Adviser on Tourism, Idris Aregbe, at Fadeyi, he described the initiative as part of the transformative power of education and governmentt’s commitment to ensuring a brighter future for our children. “The new classrooms are a reflection of our belief in achieving greatness through learning,” Aregbe remarked.
At Euba Junior High School, he lamented that like many institutions in underserved areas, the school had long faced significant challenges, including overcrowded classrooms, deteriorating infrastructure, and inadequate learning facilities.
He stated that the condition had hindered effective teaching and learning, attributing it to higher “dropout rates, reduced academic performance, and limited opportunities for students to reach their full potential.
Sanwo-Olu who was represented by his Special adviser, office of Internal Audit, Dr. Mrs. Oyeyemi Ayoola, said swift actions were taken to address the issues and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to providing a safe, modern, and motivating learning environment.
“Improved infrastructure will reduce student absenteeism, increase parental involvement, and provide a more conducive learning atmosphere.Beyond its impact on students and teachers, the project has also contributed to local economic growth.
The construction phase created job opportunities for community members, offering short-term financial relief and skill development. In the long run, the benefits of quality education will ripple across Mushin as well-educated youths contribute to the local economy, drive innovation, and foster social cohesion.
“This project is not just about bricks and mortar; it is about investing in human capital and laying a strong foundation for a brighter, more equitable future. With this new classroom block, our students will be more motivated to learn, and our teachers will be better equipped to impart knowledge,” he said.
Commending the efforts of SCRPS, development partners, and all stakeholders involved, the governor urged the community to take ownership of the school and ensure it remains a center of excellence.
Students were also encouraged to make the most of the new facility”.
