Imo Governor, Hope Uzodinma, expressed his concerns about the increasing ethnic tension in Nigeria, particularly between the Yoruba and Igbo communities. He emphasized that politicians play a significant role in exacerbating these tensions by exploiting ethnic sentiments during elections, causing unnecessary divisions among Nigerians.
During a lecture organized by the Freedom of Online Newspapers in Lagos, Uzodinma, represented by Declan Emelumba, Imo’s commissioner for information, pointed out that Nigerians are generally accommodating of each other, but political manipulation creates discord and unease.
Uzodinma highlighted that the key to overcoming the various challenges facing the country, including poverty, unemployment, and insecurity, lies in good governance. He expressed confidence that under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria will make significant strides in overcoming underdevelopment.
The Governor acknowledged that hunger, poverty, and insecurity affect all ethnic groups in the country and that addressing these issues requires a united effort. He stressed that all Nigerians, regardless of tribe, language, or religion, understand the concept of good governance and its potential to improve their lives and the nation as a whole.
In an effort to ease tensions between the Yoruba and Igbo communities in Lagos, Uzodinma and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu jointly established a committee earlier in the month. The committee’s goal is to strengthen the relationship and foster understanding between these two groups in the south-western state.
