Peter Obi’s supporters suspend birthday fundraising amid backlash

A planned fundraising initiative by supporters of former presidential candidate Peter Obi has been suspended following widespread criticism over its transparency and necessity.

The group, which had earlier announced four dedicated bank accounts to receive donations for a nationwide rally in celebration of Obi’s birthday, made the decision after Nigerians voiced concerns about accountability and the propriety of soliciting funds for the event.

The accounts were said to be jointly managed by Serah Ibrahim, Ezeokoli Blessing, and John Alor, but the announcement quickly drew backlash from members of the public and even some within the broader Obidient movement.

In a statement released on Tuesday, signed by the group’s National Coordinator Yunusa Tanko, Director of Mobilisation Morris Monye, and Director of Strategic Communications and Media Nana Kazaure, the movement acknowledged the criticisms and admitted that the donation appeal may have been poorly communicated.

“We have received feedback and concerns regarding the recent announcement of donation accounts of the July 19 rally as a birthday celebration for H.E. Peter Obi.

We acknowledge that the release of donation account details and communication without adequate context may have created confusion and raised concerns.

We take full responsibility for that and we sincerely apologise too. Allocate your resources and lend a helping hand to those in need,” the statement read.

Clarifying the purpose of the rally, the organisers explained that the July 19th event is themed “From Compassion to Purpose: Obidients in Action for a New Possible Nigeria.”

They emphasized that it would be a day of national reflection, civic action, and a recommitment to the movement’s values, rather than a mere birthday celebration.
