Peter Obi’s long-time political ally resigns from Labour Party

Oseloka Obaze, a close associate of Peter Obi and a prominent figure in the Labour Party (LP), has formally resigned his membership of the party in protest over the controversial conduct of the April 5 governorship primary election in Anambra State.

In a letter addressed to the LP chairman of Ochuche Ward 406, Ogbaru Local Government Area, Mr Obaze cited alleged irregularities in the primary election as the key reason for his decision to part ways with the party.

Part of the letter read: “The processes, conduct and outcome of the Labour Party governorship primaries held on April 5, 2025, in Awka were fraught with outright irregularities, bordering on fraud and criminality,

“It was not in tandem with either the party’s constitution and espoused core values or true tenets of democracy.”

Obaze, a former United Nations diplomat and ex-Secretary to the Anambra State Government under Peter Obi, played a key role in Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign and was widely regarded as one of the intellectual backbones of the Obedient Movement.

Confirming the authenticity of the resignation letter to journalists on Sunday, Obaze stated: “The letter is real and speaks for itself.”

He also pointed to the unresolved leadership crisis within the Labour Party at the national level, highlighting the party’s failure to harmonise the factions loyal to Julius Abure and Nenadi Usman.

Obaze had previously resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2022, just a week before Peter Obi’s defection to the Labour Party.
