Damian Okeke-Ogene, the Vice President of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, has urged the Federal Government to pay heed to the mounting calls for the release of Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Okeke-Ogene emphasized that several notable personalities, including Anambra Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo and other stakeholders, have previously urged the government to release Kanu. He stressed that the time is now ripe for the government to take action.
Highlighting the importance of upholding the rule of law and respecting the fundamental human rights of individuals, Okeke-Ogene stated that these principles are crucial for ensuring stability in the nation. He urged the government to disregard calls for Kanu’s continued detention, as respecting the rule of law reinstates people’s confidence in governance.
Expressing strong condemnation of Asari Dokubo’s recent remarks opposing Kanu’s release, Okeke-Ogene attributed such statements to personal and selfish interests seeking favor from the government. He argued that since various competent courts have already granted Kanu his freedom, his ongoing detention is not in the best interest of the country.
Assuring that Igbo stakeholders are resolute in their efforts to secure Kanu’s release, Okeke-Ogene also addressed the recent demolition of buildings at Alaba Market in Lagos State. He urged Igbos in the area to remain calm, assuring them that the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo is actively working towards a peaceful resolution to safeguard their interests.
