Official: Erik ten Hag named new Bayer Leverkusen head coach

Bayer Leverkusen have appointed Erik ten Hag as their new head coach, officially replacing Xabi Alonso following the Spaniard’s departure to Real Madrid.

Ten Hag, 55, has signed a two-year contract beginning July 1, 2025, marking his return to German football after previously managing Bayern Munich II from 2013 to 2015.

This announcement comes after a turbulent end to his stint at Manchester United, where he was dismissed in October 2024 despite winning both the EFL Cup and FA Cup across two seasons.

Speaking on his appointment, Ten Hag said: “Leverkusen are one of the best clubs in Germany and also among the European elite.

“I’ve come here to support the ambitions that have grown in recent years. It’s an exciting period of transition and an opportunity to build something special.”

The Dutchman inherits a side that captured both the Bundesliga and DFB Cup under Alonso in 2023/24, and will be tasked with sustaining that momentum in domestic and European competitions.

His previous achievements at Ajax, including three Eredivisie titles and a memorable run to the 2018/19 Champions League semi-finals, bolster his credentials as a tactician capable of delivering results and developing talent.

Ten Hag’s first official match in charge will be in the DFB Cup opening round between August 15-18, followed by the Bundesliga opener a week later.
