The Nigeria Olympic Committee,NOC, has expressed shock over the passing of veteran sports administrator, Abba Yola.

Describing him as a committed public servant and key contributor to the growth of sports in the country, the NOC President, Habu Ahmed Gumel, in a release made available to journalists on Tuesday, on behalf of the Nigerian Olympic family, extended its sympathies to Yola’s family and the wider sports community.

“Abba Yola was more than just a passionate sports official. He was a pillar in Nigeria’s sporting landscape and a devoted public servant who gave his all to the development of athletics and football,” the statement read.

According to him, Yola served in several high profile positions within Nigeria’s sports administration, including as Chairman of Kano Pillars Football Club and as a staff member of the now-defunct Federal Ministry of Sports.

“He also held roles as Chief of Staff to former Sports Minister Chief Sunday Dare, and as Special Assistant to former Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr. Patrick Ekeji.

Over the years, Yola was appointed to numerous special committees, where his contributions left a lasting impact on policy and sports development.

His calm and respectful nature allowed him to build strong, lasting relationships. His sense of style and grace reflected the gentleman he truly was,” Engr. Gumel added.

The NOC described Yola’s passing as a great loss to Kano State and the entire Nigerian sports fraternity, calling on all to reflect on a life of service and dedication.
