The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has shown support for the Federal Government’s decision to remove fuel subsidy. However, during a media briefing on the state of the nation, TUC President Festus Osifo expressed concern that the continuous call for sacrifices from citizens was becoming unsustainable.
Osifo urged the Tinubu-led administration to lead by example and reduce the cost of governance. He particularly criticized the proposed purchase of new vehicles by the 10th National Assembly, considering the current economic situation.
The TUC President emphasized that burdening the masses with the complete removal of fuel subsidy while those in power enjoyed wealth was unfair. He called on President Bola Tinubu to reduce the number of aides and limit each new minister to a maximum of two assistants.
TUC also advocated for exploring alternative options to Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), providing palliatives, and reducing the overall cost of governance. They believed that it shouldn’t be a situation where some citizens bear the brunt of the crisis while others in power remain unaffected.
Osifo requested the government to expedite the work of committees overseeing the consultation on the withdrawal of fuel subsidies. TUC would only support transparent and tangible incentives and opposed any attempts to impose cash transfer palliatives without proper transparency.
Regarding the proposed increase in electricity tariff, TUC expressed concerns about the timing and potential impact on the citizens. They emphasized that the endurance level of Nigerians was reaching its limit, and policies should be phased out carefully to avoid unnecessary suffering.
Lastly, TUC opposed the proposed 7.5 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). They warned that if implemented, it could set a precedent for introducing a similar VAT on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in the future, leading to further challenges for the citizens. TUC vowed to monitor the situation closely to prevent any hidden attempts by the government to introduce such measures.
