Nigeria Immigration expands contactless passport system to more countries

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has officially launched the second phase of its contactless biometric passport application system in four additional countries — the United States, Brazil, Jamaica, and Mexico — as part of efforts to make passport renewal easier for Nigerians abroad.

This development was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the NIS Public Relations Officer, Mr. Akinsola Akinlabi, through the service’s official X (formerly Twitter) page.

According to the announcement, the system went live in the U.S. on April 11, followed by Jamaica and Mexico on April 14, with Brazil also joining the rollout on the same date.

Akinlabi noted that the initiative is part of the service’s wider digital transformation agenda aimed at enhancing convenience and reducing in-person visits to passport centers.

“The application is currently available on the Google Play Store as NIS Mobile, allowing Nigerians to renew their passports without visiting any passport center for biometric enrollment,” he stated.

He further disclosed that an Apple Store version will be launched soon, and an enhanced edition of the NIS Mobile App for both Android and iOS platforms is in the pipeline to offer a more seamless user experience.

With this latest expansion, the contactless biometric passport application system is now available in Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Jamaica, Brazil, Europe, and Asia.

However, the service clarified that the system is yet to be deployed in Australia and Nigeria, with launch dates for both countries to be announced at a later time.

Akinlabi reaffirmed the NIS’s dedication to leveraging technology to deliver efficient and accessible services to Nigerians globally.
