Nigeria and Cuba have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen political collaboration and deepen cooperation in trade, investment, healthcare, science, and technology.
The agreement was formalized on Monday during a meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and his Cuban counterpart, His Excellency Bruno Eduardo Rodríguez Parrilla, in Abuja.
Tuggar described the visit as significant, highlighting the long-standing ties between both nations dating back to 1974.
He noted that Nigeria and Cuba share historical and cultural bonds, with Cuba playing a key role in supporting Africa’s fight against colonial and racist regimes.
He said, “As you are aware, the Foreign Minister of Cuba is visiting us here in Abuja today, and this, for us, is a very important visit because of the special relationship Nigeria has with Cuba that goes back decades”.
He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, emphasizing that Cuba is considered part of Nigeria’s diaspora due to shared cultural heritage.
Rodríguez Parrilla, in his remarks, praised Nigeria’s progress and expressed appreciation for the country’s longstanding support for Cuba against international sanctions.
The Cuban minister affirmed Cuba’s deep cultural and ancestral ties to Nigeria, describing the West African nation as integral to Cuba’s identity.
“Nigeria and Cuba have been united by history, tradition, religion, and common challenges. This visit is a positive step towards further enhancing our cooperation,” he said.
The meeting concluded with both countries pledging to explore new areas of collaboration while consolidating existing agreements.
