Tragedy strikes as renowned Kenyan author and literary icon, Ngugi Wa Thiong’o passes away at 87.
His daughter, Wanjiku Wa Ngugi, announced his passing in a Facebook post on May 28, 2025.
According to reports, Ngugi Wa Thiong’o passed away due to complications related to kidney problems, which he had been battling in recent years.
While the circumstances surrounding his passing and burial remain private, Ngugi Wa Thiong’o’s legacy as a literary giant and advocate for African languages and identity continues to inspire readers and writers globally.
The post reads, “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dad, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o this Wednesday morning, 28th May 2025. He lived a full life, fought a good fight. As was his last wish, let’s celebrate his life and his work. Rîa ratha na rîa thŭa. Tŭrî aira!”.
