The Nigerian Air Force has announced that investigations have commenced into the circumstances surrounding the death of one of its personnel attached to its Bauchi Command, Corporal A. S. Wulumba.
The affected officer reportedly died while confined to a guardroom after being detained for allegedly arriving late to his duty post.
Numdarai Wulumba, his grieving sister, stated that her brother informed her on May 4, 2025, that he had been detained.
According to her, he arrived late for duty due to health complications. She said his explanation was dismissed by his commander, who then ordered his confinement.
She explained that detention for minor offences like lateness is not supposed to exceed 24 hours, according to military rules, stressing that he should have been court-martialled if necessary, not locked up indefinitely. “And now he’s gone,” she lamented.
NAF spokesman, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, expressed regret over the incident.
The spokesman assured that a board of inquiry had been set up to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
Ejodame said, “The NAF deeply regrets to confirm the unfortunate passing of Corporal A. S. Wulumba. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”
He stated that the loss of any of their personnel is profoundly felt across the Service, adding that, in line with standard procedure, a board of inquiry has been convened to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death.
He explained that further information will be provided as the investigation progresses and that the NAF remains committed to the welfare of its personnel and to upholding the highest standards.
