The National Hydro Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has reviewed the contracts for the construction of houses at Muregi Resettlement Centre for flood victims in Mokwa Local Council of Niger State by 100 per cent, pledging that the project would be delivered as scheduled.

The Managing Director of the Commission, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, gave the hint during the inspection visit to the site along side his management team to ascertain the level of work done so far.

The N-HYPPADEC boss said the review of the contracts became necessary due to the escalating price of building materials. He disclosed that the commission is expected to deliver 200 units of two bedroom flats, adding that the construction of 120 units was ongoing, out of which 82 units were at between 60 to 80 per cent completion. He stated that the cost of building each unit stands at N12 million now from initial N6 million.

Yelwa, however, stated that the commission owed none of the contractors, adding that they were happy with the review.

“That’s why they remain on the site. The target is to ensure its completion for occupation by the beneficiaries,” he said.  He also promised to renovate the residence of the district head and the mosque as well as to provide a health facility and a block of classrooms when buildings are occupied.

Yelwa stated that Bida Local Council and Niger State Government would be informed to facilitate the allocation of the units to the benefiting communities.

Niger State Coordinator in charge of the Muregi Resettlement Centre, Mohammed Muregi, expressed satisfaction with the intervention of the commission, which he described as overwhelming.

He praised the standard and quality of work done so far, adding that when completed, there would be a permanent home for the people of the community even as the fear of death during flooding would be eliminated.
