The International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Nigeria has noted the need to prioritize the safety, well-being of women and children now exposed to heightened risks of exploitation, abuse, and deep psychological trauma in response to the crisis for victims of Mokwa flood in Niger state.
The Country Vice President, FIDA Nigeria, Eliana Matins and Chineze Obianyo, National Publicity Secretary in a statement expressed deep condolences to the people of Mokwa, Niger State, following the devastating flood disaster that occurred on May 29, 2025.
They commended the interventions of the Niger State Government, NEMA, and various humanitarian actors who are on ground as well as salute the courage of survivors and first responders
However, FIDA noted that the magnitude of the crisis demands a more coordinated, compassionate, and gender-sensitive response as impact on women and children is particularly alarming.
According to them, ” As the most vulnerable group in times of crisis, many women and children are now exposed to heightened risks of exploitation, abuse, and deep psychological trauma”
“Their safety, dignity, and well-being must be urgently prioritized”.
Against this background, they called on the government, civil society, development partners, and well-meaning Nigerians to prioritize the protection and needs of women and children in all response and recovery efforts.
The association explained that other areas include” providing legal aid and psychosocial support to survivors, particularly those who may be dealing with trauma, abuse, or displacement”
“Ensure adequate relief and shelter, with special attention to the health, safety, and dignity of women and girls.Include women’s voices in all stages of relief, rehabilitation, and long-term recovery planning”.
The duo further emphasized that in line with it’s mandate, FIDA Niger State branch will be actively working with stakeholders to provide targeted legal and humanitarian support to affected women and children.
“We mourn with Mokwa. We stand with its people. And we remain committed to doing our part to restore hope, uphold dignity, and ensure justice—especially for those who are often forgotten in times of crisis, ” the statement stated.
