The recent court ruling sentencing Mr. Nwachukwu, husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi, to death by hanging has sparked widespread discussion across social media, with Nigerians expressing a range of opinions.
While many have applauded the verdict as a form of justice, others have voiced concern for the couple’s children, who are now on the verge of losing their father as well.
GistLover previously reported that on Monday, April 27, a High Court in Lagos found Mr. Nwachukwu guilty in relation to his wife’s death and sentenced him accordingly. His initial arraignment dates back to 2022, when he was charged with offenses including spousal battery, child cruelty, and criminal intimidation.
Celebrity lawyer Stan Alieke, once a legal representative for singer Speed Darlington, criticized the death sentence and instead advocated for life imprisonment. He emphasized the impact on Osinachi’s children, arguing they still need their father in some capacity.
Alieke stated:
“This singer Osinachi case should be a reason why death sentence should be abolished. For the sake of their kids, they already lost their mom, it will be brutal for the kids for their dad to be k!lled too. I know some of you will argue that the kids are better off as orphans than to have a kila dad, but I believe that the kids will beg to differ. The man should be sentenced to life imprisonment so the kids could visit him in jail whenever they miss him. He’s still their father, let him not d!e too.”
The lawyer’s comments have fueled further debate, particularly around the ethics of capital punishment and its long-term effects on surviving family members.
