The Nigerian military has stepped up efforts to tackle security challenges in the North Central region with the deployment of new combat and mobility equipment to troops under Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS).
On Thursday, June 19, 2025, the Armed Forces delivered a fresh consignment of gear to the OPWS Headquarters in Makurdi, Benue State. The equipment, which includes troop-carrying vehicles, gun trucks, protective gear, and more than 100 motorcycles, is aimed at improving troop movement, boosting morale, and enhancing overall combat effectiveness in the fight against banditry and other asymmetric threats.
The deployment was led by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, and the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede.
Force Commander of OPWS, Major General Moses Gara described the development as a major boost to ongoing operations. He said the motorcycles, provided by the Army Chief, will help troops navigate difficult terrain quickly, while the gun trucks approved by the Defence Chief will enhance both mobility and troop protection.
“We deeply appreciate this support. It shows a strong commitment by the Defence Headquarters to support joint efforts among military and other security agencies,” General Gara said.
He also commended the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, for deploying additional air platforms to the operation, which he noted would improve surveillance and provide close air support for ground troops.
In mentioning the new platforms, General Gara expressed that they will be used in clearance and stabilization operations very rapidly so that troops can extend their reach, increase their speed and stay ahead of existing threats in volatile areas.
This latest deployment reflects a renewed effort by the Armed Forces to restore peace and security across the region, as they are determined to continually push back against those malicious elements in society that pose a threat to the safety of communities.
