Man jailed by debtor over ₦1.137m debt set for release as influencer raises funds

A Nigerian man who was jailed by his debtor over a ₦1,137,000 debt is set to regain his freedom after an influencer helped raise funds to clear his debt.

The story gained traction on X (formerly Twitter) after an influencer, @Wizarab10, shared a document revealing that the man was imprisoned due to the outstanding debt.

Determined to help, the influencer reportedly reached out to a lawyer to connect with the incarcerated man. Just days later, he provided an update, announcing that the debt had been settled.

He wrote: “Resolution has been reached, and the debt has been sorted. He will be out of prison on Thursday. Thanks to everyone for being a part of this.”

The lawyer involved in the case also shed light on the circumstances that led to the man’s imprisonment.

“I have spoken with his wife. He was working for his boss, selling items, but he used part of the money to cover his pregnant wife’s medical expenses. When she was due for delivery, he used the rest to settle the hospital bills,” he explained.

“They have a seven-month-old baby, and the boss insisted that until the debt was fully repaid, he wouldn’t drop the case. The man has been in prison since last year, and his case is set to be heard on Thursday in Ikorodu.”

“By God’s grace, we will ensure the debt is settled, and he will be released that day. If anyone is willing to support him or offer him a job after his release, please feel free to reach out.”

As news of his impending release spread online, social media users flooded the comment section with their thoughts and reactions.
