Man disqualified from ₦1.5m monthly job after smoking ahead of medical test

A Nigerian man has reportedly lost a ₦1.5 million-per-month job opportunity after smoking shortly before his medical screening for the role.

The incident was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a user, @ibukun_tayo, who is believed to be the medical practitioner assigned to assess the candidate.

According to her, the man arrived for his medicals on the day of screening with clear signs of having recently smoked.

The job offer, which excluded bonuses, required the candidate to pass a clean medical test.

In her words: “This patient was scheduled for his medicals today. A role worth ₦1.5 million monthly (excluding bonuses) was on the line. He came in having smoked, somewhere, freshly used, in his mind it will not show in the results?”

She continued, “After assessment, I had no choice but to mark him medically unfit.”

She added that the man’s loss wasn’t due to a lack of qualification, but rather a failure in discipline, saying, “A dream job, gone in seconds. Not because he wasn’t qualified, but because discipline failed him. In this life, opportunities don’t always knock twice.”

The post drew widespread attention, with many users flooding the comment section to share their reactions and lessons learned from the unfortunate outcome.

See some reactions below:

@BunduForAfrika1: “As far as I’m not anti-smoking, why will you go and smoke before going for a medical screening for a job offer ? They wanted to know if you are medically fit for the job, but you decided to show them you engage in activities that are unhealthy for your lungs.”

@leighcon: “How is the person medically unfit because they smoked? Is smoking a medical condition? And is the clinic a department of the company? How did information about the compensation get to those running medical test?”

@sanniaanu1_1524: “Like I still don’t get what you’re saying, so you literally disqualified someone because he smoke? And that’s not enough for you but you still bring it here. Does smoking stop him from doing his job? Do you even know that many Dr are into smoking too? You deserve proper beating.”

@Linda_dadiva1: “Sorry I want to ask. Will you do same to a HIV+ candidate/ patient? Top guys in corporate world smoke. Not like I am in support of smoking, but come onnnn.”

@iam_YoungShozy: “Then he will proceed to the mountain of fire to rebuke the devil and wage unnecessary war with the innocent village people.”

@Cniro: “You are too wicked, you denied someone a job opportunity because you want to justify your selfish mindset that he is not a disciplined patient. I know an Indian doctor that can’t stay up to 5 minutes without smoking.”
