Liverpool surrender two-goal lead as Arsenal fight back to draw at Anfield

Liverpool saw their title party spoilt after squandering a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw against Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday.

Despite a blistering start, the Reds collapsed in the second half as Mikel Arteta’s side mounted a determined comeback.

The hosts took control midway through the first half with two quick-fire goals.

Cody Gakpo opened the scoring with a powerful header after a rapid throw-in led to an Andy Robertson cross.

Less than two minutes later, Dominik Szoboszlai teed up Luis Diaz for Liverpool’s second, capitalising on poor defensive positioning from Arsenal’s William Saliba.

Arsenal, however, responded strongly after the break. Gabriel Martinelli reignited the contest with a deft header from Leandro Trossard’s delivery, exposing Liverpool’s lapse in concentration.

The visitors then levelled through Mikel Merino, who nodded home from close range after catching Liverpool’s defence flat-footed.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, who recently confirmed his decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, received a mixed reception upon his substitution appearance.

His lapse in defensive awareness played a role in Arsenal’s equaliser, adding to the tension among home supporters.

Although Arsenal were reduced to ten men following Merino’s red card late on, Liverpool failed to capitalize on their numbers.
