Simon Mwadkwon Emerges as Minority Leader, Defeating Aminu Tambuwal in Senate Race
In a surprising turn of events, Senator Simon Mwadkwon representing Plateau North has emerged victorious over Aminu Tambuwal, the senator representing Sokoto South, in the race for minority leader in the upper legislative chamber.
The announcement of the minority leadership was made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday, unveiling the new lineup of the minority caucus.
“The minority caucus of the senate is comprised of approximately seven political parties and they have selected their leadership. Therefore, I will proceed to announce the names,” Akpabio stated.
Senator Simon Mwadkwon was announced as the minority leader, with Oyewumi Olalere as the deputy minority leader, Senator Darlington Nwokocha as the minority whip, and Senator Rufai Anga as the deputy minority whip.
Aminu Tambuwal, the immediate-past governor of Sokoto and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, had expressed his interest in leading the minority caucus. However, his name was conspicuously absent when the principal officers of the minority leadership were announced.
Tambuwal’s bid for the position encountered strong resistance from members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Many PDP members remain displeased with Tambuwal’s role in ensuring former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar secured the party’s presidential nomination.
