The body of former President Muhammadu Buhari has departed London, United Kingdom, on Tuesday morning, en route to his hometown of Daura in Katsina State for burial.
The remains were flown aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft, accompanied by a high-level Federal Government delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The delegation is overseeing the final documentation and logistics involved in returning the late president’s body to Nigerian soil.
Information Minister Mohammed Idris had earlier announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will personally receive Buhari’s remains upon arrival in Katsina.
A brief military ceremony is expected to take place at the airport before the body is transported to Daura for burial.
According to Idris, the Jana’iza (Islamic funeral prayer) will be conducted in Daura, followed by Buhari’s interment at his private residence.
As part of the national mourning, President Tinubu has directed that condolence registers be opened across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), as well as at Nigerian embassies and missions abroad.
Another register is being opened at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.
The Minister noted that messages of condolence have continued to pour in from world leaders, highlighting Buhari’s legacy and global recognition.
To ensure a dignified burial process, Tinubu has set up an Inter-Ministerial Committee, chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
The committee will work with the Katsina State Government and the Buhari family to coordinate all related activities.
In addition, 25 members of the Federal Executive Council have been directed to proceed to Katsina to attend the burial and remain in Daura for the Third-Day Islamic prayers scheduled for Wednesday.
