Chelsea forward João Félix is reportedly keen on returning to Benfica, but head coach Bruno Lage has made it clear the move hinges on more than just mutual interest.
According to Spanish outlet Marca, Félix was spotted at the Hard Rock Stadium during Benfica’s FIFA Club World Cup clash against Boca Juniors in the U.S., fuelling speculation about a potential reunion.
The Portuguese attacker, currently on vacation, was notably absent from Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Los Angeles FC.
While Lage has welcomed the idea of Félix returning to the club where he rose to prominence, he was firm about the financial realities Benfica face.
“There have to be two desires: the desire and the financial aspect,” Lage told reporters.
“There is desire on both sides. But João must understand that Benfica cannot afford the salary he’s used to. This must be clear.”
Félix spent the latter part of last season on loan at AC Milan after falling out of favour at Stamford Bridge.
His contract situation with Chelsea remains unresolved, but a permanent exit is likely as the Blues continue to reshape their squad.
Benfica, meanwhile, are set to face Auckland City on June 20 in their next Club World Cup fixture.
