The Iranian embassy in Damascus will remain closed for the foreseeable future due to the political unrest in Syria.

This was made known by a Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei in Tehran on Tuesday.

Baghaei stated that the reopening of the embassy is not imminent, as it requires political and security preparations.

He mentioned that Iran will take necessary actions once the issues are addressed.

The long-time Syrian leader, Bashar al-Assad, fled last weekend following an 11-day rebel offensive led by the Islamist group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, HTS.

Following his overthrow, insurgents attacked the Iranian embassy in Damascus, reportedly causing significant damage.

For Tehran, Al-Assad was a crucial ally in its self-declared resistance against Israel. Syria also acted as a route for Iranian arms shipments to the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon.

Consequently, Iran has provided substantial financial and military support to Al-Assad and has labeled the HTS, now controlling Damascus as terrorists.
