Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency has confirmed that Bank Sepah is experiencing widespread service disruptions following a cyberattack, just hours after an Israel-linked hacking group claimed responsibility for targeting the bank.
DAILY POST had earlier reported that the group, known as Gonjeshke Darande (Predatory Sparrow), announced earlier today that it had destroyed key data belonging to the sanctioned Iranian bank, which it accused of supporting Tehran’s ballistic missile and nuclear programmes.
Fars reported that customers have been unable to access key banking services, including ATM withdrawals and online transactions.
The outlet also warned of potential ripple effects, especially at petrol stations that depend on Bank Sepah to process fuel purchases.
Despite these reports, Iran’s central bank attempted to downplay the situation. A spokesperson told the state-run IRNA news agency that “all banking operations are running smoothly and providing service to their customers.”
Bank Sepah, one of Iran’s oldest financial institutions, has been previously sanctioned by the U.S. and European Union for allegedly facilitating transactions related to Iran’s defence sector.
