IAEA Chief convenes emergency meeting after US strikes on Iran

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, announced on Sunday that he will convene an emergency meeting of the agency’s Board of Governors on Monday, following the United States’ direct military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Grossi said the extraordinary session was necessitated by the “serious escalation” after the U.S. bombed Iran’s key nuclear sites, including Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan, in coordination with Israel.

The IAEA chief has faced mounting criticism from Tehran in recent days, with Iranian officials accusing him of making “inflammatory and contradictory” statements that they say emboldened Israel’s initial strikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization has also accused the IAEA of politicizing its role and failing to prevent what it described as “illegal aggression against peaceful facilities.”

The emergency meeting in Vienna is expected to focus on the potential risks of nuclear contamination, the impact on global non-proliferation efforts, and how to secure remaining Iranian nuclear assets amid ongoing military conflict.

Grossi has not yet confirmed if Iranian or U.S. representatives will be in attendance.
