…Condemns Unlawful Harassment, Intimidation

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has defended the right of a young NYSC corper who recently voiced strong criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA reaffirmed that every citizen has the right to express their opinions on governmental performance without fear of intimidation or retribution.
The group emphasized that the fundamental human rights enshrined in Chapter 4 of the Nigerian Constitution, particularly the right to freedom of expression, supersede the NYSC bylaw. It maintained that the bylaw does not override constitutionally guaranteed freedoms, including those of youth corps members.
HURIWA recalled that the corper, Miss Uguamaye, had in a now-viral TikTok video on her handle, @talktoraye, expressed frustration over Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions, citing high inflation and economic hardship.
In the video, Uguamaye criticized the President, describing him as a “terrible leader”, while questioning the government’s efforts to alleviate hardship. She also criticized Lagos State, calling it a “smelling state” with poor living conditions.
HURIWA noted that the video sparked widespread discussion across social media platforms, leading to its virality. However, after it went viral, Uguamaye later posted another video, alleging that she was being threatened by NYSC authorities.
The rights group strongly condemned any harassment, intimidation, or threats against the corper, stating:
“The loyalty of corps members is to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, not to any specific holder of the office of the President.”
Citing Section 39(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, HURIWA emphasized: “Every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart ideas and information without interference.”
HURIWA further stated: “This fundamental right is the cornerstone of our democracy, allowing citizens to hold their leaders accountable and advocate for positive change.”
The group expressed deep concern over reports that NYSC officials allegedly threatened Uguamaye, saying:
“Such actions contradict democratic principles and create an atmosphere of fear, preventing open dialogue and constructive criticism.”
It further stressed that rising costs of living, inflation, and government accountability are pressing issues that deserve national attention.
“Leaders must listen to the grievances of citizens and take meaningful steps to address them. Silencing dissent will not resolve Nigeria’s challenges; rather, it widens the gap between the government and the people.”
HURIWA urged the NYSC leadership to reconsider any punitive measures against Uguamaye and promote a culture of free speech among corps members.
“It is crucial for our democracy that young voices, especially those of future leaders, are not stifled but empowered to contribute to national discourse.”
The group also called on the Nigerian government to reaffirm its commitment to protecting citizens’ rights, allowing them to freely discuss their experiences and challenges.
“The resilience of our democracy depends on the active participation of citizens in addressing injustices.”
Concluding, HURIWA declared: “We stand in solidarity with this NYSC corper and all Nigerians who dare to speak truth to power.”
