On Friday evening, daring gunmen attacked a checkpoint at the well-known Opobo Junction along the Aba-Ikot Ekpene Expressway in Abia State, resulting in the deaths of two policemen and injuring another.
It was gathered that the police officers were at the junction for their usual evening stop-and-search operation.
However, a few minutes later, several police patrol teams swept into the area as residents fled the road.
According to an eyewitness, the gunmen, numbering six, came in a Sienna sport utility vehicle.
The incident caused chaos in the area, prompting shop owners along the road and traders at Ehere market to close their shops, with some abandoning their wares to seek safety.

The terrorists, who also burnt the soldiers’ patrol truck, were said to be enforcing the sit-at-home order declared by IPOB across the South-East region to mark the Biafra Day, which is celebrated annually in the region.
The heavily armed men, clad in black outfits, were seen sporadically firing shots at the junction.
