Dipo Fasina, a former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), was reported missing while in Turkey.
Initial reports indicated that the academic had disappeared during a trip to meet with Algerian government officials.
Fasina, 76 years old, was en route to Algeria but missed his connecting flight in Istanbul, Turkey.
Fortunately, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) confirmed on Sunday that he has been located.
NIDCOM collaborated with the Nigerian High Commission in Turkey to successfully locate him.
“We extend our gratitude to the Nigerian Ambassador to Turkey, who promptly dispatched officials to physically locate him in the bustling and vast Istanbul Airport,” NIDCOM stated in a tweet.
Fasina has an impressive academic background, having taught Philosophy for 34 years at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife.
He joined OAU in 1979 after completing his PhD at the University of California in Los Angeles.
In addition to being a trustee of ASUU, Fasina serves as the chairperson of the Joint Action Front (JAF), a coalition of labor movements and civil society organizations advocating for people-oriented policies in Nigeria.
Fasina is recognized for his pioneering efforts in establishing the philosophy department at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in Ogun State.
Since retiring from OAU, Fasina has continued to teach Philosophy at various universities across Nigeria.
