Jimmy Carter, the late president of the United States, earned his fourth posthumous Grammy Award on Sunday for best audiobook, narration, and storytelling recording for a compilation of his last Sunday school classes in Georgia.
Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 on December 29, talks on love, forgiveness, kindness, and the afterlife at Maranatha Baptist Church in his birthplace of Plains on “Last Sundays in Plains: A Centennial Celebration.
“LeAnn Rimes, Jon Batiste, and Darius Rucker are among the musicians that contributed to the audiobook, which was published in August 2024, a few months before he passed away.
The award was accepted during the pre-gala event in Los Angeles by Jason Carter, one of the former president’s grandchildren who gave a eulogy at his funeral.
“It is truly amazing to have his words captured in this way for my family and the world,” he said to the crowd, many of whom stood to pay tribute to the former president.
Country music icon Dolly Parton, funk guru George Clinton, and famous vocalist Barbra Streisand were among the other candidates in the category.
Carter, who was president of the United States for one term from 1977 to 1981, taught Sunday school at Maranatha for fifty years, typically more than once a month.
His three prior Grammys were for “Faith – A Journey for All” in 2019, “A Full Life: Reflections at 90” in 2016, and “Our Endangered Values: America’s Moral Crisis” in 2007.
All three were for best spoken word albums.
There were ten Grammy nominations for the late politician.
Both former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton have two Grammys.
