Experts have stressed the need to decarbonise the upstream sector to enhance sustainability and address issues relating to climate change.
They made the call at the maiden edition of Asharami Square in Lagos, arguing that since the upstream sector contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, implementing decarbonisation strategies could mitigate the environmental impact of the sector’s operations while promoting long-term sustainability.
They further mentioned that decarbonising the upstream sector was essential for mitigating climate change and ensuring the sustainability of energy resources and urged the adoption of cleaner technologies, energy efficiency and renewable energy.
Regional Director for West Africa, The Ford Foundation, Dr Chichi Aniagolu-Okoye, said despite Africa’s minimal contribution to global carbon emissions, the continent should ensure the reduction in carbon emissions as it significantly impacts crops, weather and other critical areas.
She mentioned that to reduce carbon emissions, Nigeria needs to transition from its dependence on fossil fuels to cleaner energy sources.
Group Project Manager, Asharami Energy, Wole Ajeigbe, said energy demand in Africa would continue to rise, driven by increased use of oil and gas. He reiterated that with the surge in energy demand, it is essential to decarbonise the upstream sector to ensure sustainability.
He added that African governments should foster an environment conducive to investment, tap into available capital pools, attract and develop essential capabilities for the energy future and commit to boosting gas production as a key strategy for decarbonising the upstream sector.
