Written by Areatatafo

Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has expressed sadness over the death of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Muhammadu Lawal Uwais, describing him as a towering figure in the Nigerian judiciary and a man of integrity.

Justice Uwais, who died at the age of 88, served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006 and was widely regarded as one of the most influential judicial officers in the country’s history.

Malami noted that Uwais’ leadership on the bench was marked by bold reforms, a firm commitment to justice, and a strong defence of the rule of law.

He also recalled the late jurist’s post-retirement role as Chairman of the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee, which laid the foundation for ongoing electoral reform discussions in Nigeria.

Malami prayed for the forgiveness of Uwais’ shortcomings and for strength and comfort for his family, the judiciary, and Nigerians during this difficult time.
