In a significant move to bolster national security and streamline travel documentation, the Federal Government of Nigeria has automated border control processes, including the introduction of online entry and exit cards.
The new system, which takes effect from May 1, 2025, is aimed at enhancing record-keeping and preventing the entry of persons on international watchlists.
The initiative was unveiled during a joint media briefing by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, held in Abuja on Wednesday.
Keyamo explained the functionality of the new system, highlighting its role in ensuring efficient monitoring of travelers’ entry and exit.
“As you are coming into the country, you have filled an entry card online. It is automated, so within the system, once they input your passport number, your details come up immediately—when you entered, the type of visa, and the duration of your stay,” he said.
He emphasized that travelers will now be required to present an online-generated exit card before boarding a flight out of Nigeria.
“They won’t give you a boarding pass without it. The system shows if you’ve overstayed. If so, you’ll be denied boarding and referred to immigration. It’s as simple as that,” Keyamo stated.
The aviation minister commended the collaborative efforts between the two ministries, describing the partnership as “seamless.”
In his remarks, Dr. Tunji Ojo underscored the security implications of the reform, noting that the cooperation between both ministries has already yielded significant results.
“Some people on the Interpol red list have been arrested at the point of entry into Nigeria through the Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS). Before now, these individuals would have easily slipped in undetected,” Ojo said.
He further revealed that E-Gates are already operational at major international airports in Lagos and Abuja, adding that the automation of the landing and exit card marks the third and final leg of the reform process.
“Previously, travelers had to fill out paper forms manually. Now, with over 230 million brilliant Nigerians, we’re leading with technology. Starting May 1, all entry and exit cards must be filled online,” he announced.
To ensure a smooth rollout, both ministers disclosed that a joint implementation committee will be set up and a three-month amnesty window will be provided to allow travelers and stakeholders to adapt to the new system.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and other relevant agencies have been directed to enforce the policy, which officials say will enhance transparency, data accuracy, and national security.
