Couple taking baby to school arrested by Owerri police, assaulted, asked to pay ₦500k bail

A Nigerian couple has narrated how police officers in Owerri allegedly arrested them while taking their baby to school, assaulted them, seized their car key, and demanded ₦500,000 for bail.

The wife shared her ordeal in a lengthy video on TikTok, explaining how the incident unfolded.

According to her, their child was supposed to be picked up by the school bus, but since it was faulty, she and her husband decided to drive the baby to school themselves.

On the way, she got hungry and asked her husband to stop so she could buy food.

While they were parked, a car pulled up beside them, and individuals who identified themselves as police officers stepped out and began attacking her husband, ordering him to enter their vehicle.

Despite her protests and demands to know why he was being arrested, they refused to provide any explanation and told her to come to the station.

Barely a minute later, the officers returned and took her as well.

Shortly into the ride, they began assaulting her for questioning them, while her husband watched helplessly.

She claimed that both she and her husband endured over 20 slaps and verbal abuse before the officers demanded ₦500,000 for bail.

When her husband insisted he didn’t have that amount, he was repeatedly slapped while in handcuffs.

After intense pressure, he eventually agreed to pay ₦150,000. Once the money was handed over, the officers released them but took their car key with them.

Determined to retrieve their car key, the couple quickly got on a motorcycle and chased after the officers.

When the officers noticed, one of them stepped out and ran after the wife while her husband had already gone to gather people for help.

She managed to escape by seeking refuge at a nearby car wash.

Expressing her frustration, she lashed out at the police, saying: “Police officers are thieves. If any of them passes away, they should be thrown into a dustbin. They are evil and very wicked.”

As her video circulated online, concerned individuals flooded the comment section to share their reactions.
