The Toronto Police Service says it has arrested Amaka
Sonnberger, a Nigerian woman living in the country who has reportedly spewed
death threats and hate speech against certain tribes.
Sonnberger had vowed to poison the meals of Yorubas and
Benin people.
The 46-year-old, who was cheered on by others in the clip,
urged that they take the same actions against people from other tribes.
On August 28, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, CEO of Nigerians in
Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), said a group of Nigerians in Canada reported the
woman to the relevant authorities.
Later, reports began to surface that Sonnberger had been
arrested but in a subsequent video, she denied the statement, boasting that she
is a Canadian citizen and would be untouched in the country.
In a statement on Sunday, the Canadian police said it
arrested Sonnberger in connection to her video where she allegedly threatened
to kill specific members of the Nigerian community.
“This investigation is being treated as a suspected
hate-motivated offence,” the police said, adding that she has been charged with
uttering threats.
Sonnberger is scheduled to appear before a court on Monday
(today).
