The Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation of Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments in the Vatican City, Rome, Francis Cardinal Arinze, will today expected to plant Papal Trees in front of Administrative Block of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam Campus, Anambra State.
Today's tree planting by Arinze is intended to glorify the holiness of the premises where the tree, in honour of the Pontiff, is planted.
Apart from the Papal Tree, some ornamental and economic trees would also be planted during the scheduled unveiling of the COOU Five-Year Strategic Plan for Tree Planting and Climate Action and Dialogue on Climate Change Mitigation Strategies.
Disclosing this to newsmen, yesterday, the Acting Vice Chancellor of COOU, Prof. Kate Omenugha explained that the institution will use the occasion to promote environmental sustainability, advancing the cause of a livable and prosperous society.
Omenugha pointed out that the Five-Year Strategic Plan for Tree Planting and Climate Action being powered through the university's One Staff – One Tree, One Student -One Tree Campaign and collaborative partnerships is intended to ultimately deliver one million native trees across the three campuses of the university and beyond.
She explained that the initiative is aimed to beautify the university campus and contribute to a healthier environment by absorbing carbon dioxide, improving air quality, providing natural shade, promoting the green economy and advancing climate literacy.
