The Abia State Government has commenced the demolition of illegal motor parks and shanties along Abia Tower axis of the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway and the Amachara axis of Umuahia.
The demolishing of the structures, according to the General Manager of Umuahia Capital Development Authority, Mr Kingsley Agomoh, was in line with the Abia State government’s commitment to enhance the aesthetics of the state and ensure orderliness in the conduct of activities.
He explained that the owners of the illegal motor parks and shanties were duly informed and given quit notices.
Agomo, who said that the state government will no longer tolerate the activities of operators of illegal motor parks and the erection of shanties, said the illegal structures defaced the aesthetics of Umuahia, the state capital.
He directed operators of trailers and buses and other transporters to move to Ohiya trailer and bus terminal, which according to him, is more conducive for their buses, pointing out that the exercise is not targeting any person and is in the interest of the state.
The general manager, who said that ongoing projects by the present administration is changing the outlook of the state, appealed for people’s support for the administration to sustain the development.
Traders and transporters who were displaced by the demolition were seen scrambling to salvage their property from the debris.
