Ali Ndume, senator representing Borno south, has led a
delegation from his senatorial district in donating N200 million to victims of
the flood in Maiduguri, the state capital.
On September 10, Alau Dam, which had been at full capacity
in the weeks prior, collapsed, leading to the worst flooding in the state in 30
years.
The flood affected swathes of Maiduguri, culminating in the
displacement of over 400,000 residents and the death of over 30 persons.
The donation was presented by representatives from the nine
LGAs of southern Borno, led by Ndume and Umar Kadafur, Borno’s deputy governor.
Speaking during the visit to Babagana Zulum, Borno governor,
Ndume said the contribution was in response to calls for assistance for those
affected by the flood.
He said that the funds were raised by indigenes of the zone,
both at home and abroad.
Kadafur, who handed over the cheque to Zulum, appreciated
those who contributed for their kind gesture.
“We are here not only
to sympathise with you but to present a cheque of N200m to the state government
flood basket fund,” Kadafur said.
“We want to assure you that you are not alone as the people
of southern Borno are strongly behind you in this trying moment.
“More donations from southern Borno are still being
expected.”
On his part, Zulum expressed gratitude for the support and
asked for continued unity among the people to foster meaningful development.
The delegation also visited Abubakar Umar-Garbai El-Kanemi,
the Shehu of Borno, whose palace was also affected by the flood.
They presented the royal father with N10 million in support.
Members of the Borno state house of assembly also paid a
sympathy visit to Zulum, contributing N60 million to assist the flood victims.
