Fluminense defender Thiago Silva has backed his former club Chelsea to win the FIFA Club World Cup following their 2-0 semi-final victory over the Brazilian side on Tuesday.
Silva, who started the match for Fluminense, watched as two goals from Joao Pedro secured Chelsea’s place in the final, set for this weekend in the United States.
Speaking to Globo after the defeat, the 39-year-old veteran predicted Chelsea would go all the way, though admitted mixed feelings if they were to face Paris Saint-Germain, another of his former clubs.
“I now hope Chelsea can do well in the final, regardless of who they face,” Silva said.
“If it is Paris Saint-Germain, my heart will be divided. If it is Real Madrid, I’m definitely rooting for Chelsea.”
PSG take on Real Madrid in the second semi-final on Wednesday night, with the winner facing Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea in the final.
Silva concluded his comments with a message of encouragement to Chelsea’s Joao Pedro, who scored a brace against his side:
“Now it’s time to lift our heads, wish Joao Pedro luck, and move on.”
