Maresca clears air on Chelsea’s goalkeeper hierarchy after failed Maignan bid

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has addressed the club’s goalkeeper situation following their unsuccessful move for AC Milan’s Mike Maignan, stating that Robert Sanchez remains the No.1 choice.

The Blues had been in talks to replace Sanchez with Maignan earlier this summer but failed to meet AC Milan’s valuation before departing for the Club World Cup in the United States.

Despite that, Maresca insists the current goalkeeping structure is settled.

“The keeper situation is simple,” Maresca told reporters. “Robert is No.1, Filip is No.2 and we will analyse and judge Penders.”

Sanchez, along with Filip Jorgensen and new signing Mike Penders, are the three options Chelsea have brought to Atlanta ahead of their Club World Cup opener against LAFC on Monday.

While Maignan remains a target for the West London club, Maresca declined to discuss any ongoing or future negotiations.

“Maignan and different players at other clubs, I don’t think it is worth talking about them,” he added.

Chelsea are favourites to top Group D and advance to the knockout stages. Goal reports that any renewed approach for Maignan will wait until after the tournament.
