Arsenal have taken a major step toward reinforcing their midfield ahead of next season, reaching a verbal agreement to sign Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners are poised to trigger the Spanish international’s £51 million (€60m) release clause following the player’s commitment to a long-term deal.
Zubimendi, 26, has long been on Arsenal’s radar, with earlier interest reportedly blocked by the midfielder’s desire to remain at his boyhood club.
However, after rejecting advances from Liverpool and other European clubs last summer, the Euro 2024 winner is now ready to make a move to north London.
A natural defensive midfielder, Zubimendi is viewed as a long-term replacement for Jorginho, who is set to leave Arsenal for Flamengo on a free transfer.
Statistically, Zubimendi offers a blend of composure and steel, averaging 2.2 tackles, 2.4 clearances, and 4.1 recoveries per game in La Liga this season.
His 58% duel success rate further speaks to his ability to control the defensive third.
Mikel Arteta is believed to be a key factor in securing Zubimendi’s decision, with the Gunners aiming to complete the formalities early in the window to avoid competition.
